The 4 major carriers are:
T-Mobile – GSM based voice network
AT&T – GSM based voice network
Sprint – CDMA based voice network
Verizon – CDMA based voice network

What are the differences between GSM and CDMA?
GSM: The most widely used network in the world, which is good for frequent travelers. Phones with this have removable SIM cards that hold information like the phone number and contact list.

CDMA: This type has a larger foot hold in the USA, so on average there is more coverage.

3G: All companies have some form of 3G technology. This is used with phone Internet access, so that data can be sent faster than it could with the voice network standards. T-Mobile was the last company to implement 3G, so they might have less coverage currently than the three others.

Some of the standard types of phones available:
Flip phones: These are good basic phones. A nice thing about flip phones is that the main screen is always protected from scratches because it is on the inside of the phone.

Bar phones: These are also basic phones, but they are just a rectangle phone with a screen and keypad on the outside surface.

Smart phones: These phones come with advanced features, large screens, and more in general than the basic phones. These phones share a lot in common with
desktop and laptop computers. Some smart phones have full QWERTY keyboards, while others just have a large touch screen with limited buttons.
