X Amount of Memory is Enough?

False

A classic quote I’m referring to here is when Bill Gates said “640K ought to be enough for everyone.” I’m sure he was taken out of context, but it doesn’t seem true at any point.

As computer hardware improves, software will continue to consume more and more memory (and processing power). This is partly due to the difficulty of creating complex software. The more complex software becomes, the more it can do and the easier it will be to use (say voice interfaces like in Star Trek). The tools to create software will also continue to be simplified and mask away the underlying complexity, which makes programmers more productive. All of this will require more memory and processing power behind the scenes. A prime example is operating systems. Windows 95 seems similar to Windows Vista/7 on face value, but behind the scenes, much more is happening and we are generally better for it.
